MORTON supporters will be given the opportunity to select the team’s new home strip for next term after the club axed their controversial Ajax-style Nike kit.

Cappielow chiefs were forced into a U-turn following a fierce backlash from furious fans in response to the original outfit, pictured, unveiled exclusively in Tuesday’s Tele.

And the Ton board have now decided that the support should decide on the look of the jersey, with four or five bespoke designs to be put to a vote next weekend.

A club statement read: “Due to the huge number of emotional appeals to the club regarding the choice of strip for the forthcoming season, the Greenock Morton board have considered the fans’ views and would like to announce that the new home shirt for the next campaign will be chosen by our loyal supporters.

“The club and Smiths of Greenock have been working tirelessly to explore the options available to us and to meet the tight timescales ahead.

“The vote will be launched on Saturday May 28 and will close on Monday May 30 with the final choice — the supporters’ choice — being announced on Tuesday May 31.

“We will give supporters the opportunity to vote between a choice of four or five shirts; these bespoke designs will reflect the feedback we received in all recent communications to the club.

“This process must happen within these tight timescales as we have to submit the final shirt to the SPFL on Wednesday June 1.

“The full voting process will be announced on Thursday May 26 in an exclusive within the Greenock Telegraph.

“We look forward to receiving your vote!”

Meanwhile, the Ton’s first pre-season friendly has been announced, with Livingston confirming they will host the Greenock men at the Tony Macaroni arena on Tuesday July 5 with a 7pm kick-off.
