MORTON'S 2016/17 season will start in style - with a mouthwatering derby against St Mirren.

The SPFL released the fixture lists this morning - and Ton versus Saints will be Championship match of the day on August 6.

The clash offers Morton an early chance to smash a 17-year hoodoo in the Renfrewshire derby. The last time the Greenock men beat the Paisley side was way back in 1999.

They had hoped to put that to bed last term but had a poor record against their nearest rivals. Last August they drew 0-0 in Greenock despite Saints being reduced to 10 men for much of the second period and then they needed a last minute leveller to get a draw in Paisley in November.

The New Year game went the way of Alex Rae's men and his players followed that up with a comfortable 3-1 victory in the final meeting between the sides.

Ton's first home match of the 2016/17 campaign sees Falkirk visit Cappielow. The fixture list also includes a Christmas Eve clash at home to Queen of the South ahead of a Hogmanay return trip to Paisley.

Ton's last game of the season is at home to Dundee United - which will evoke memories of the famous 1996 final day promotion shootout in Greenock between the sides, which was played in front of over 12,000 people.
