MORTON were yesterday paired with Premiership Hamilton Accies at New Douglas Park in the second round of the Betfred Cup.

The Sinclair Street side were listed as seeds for the draw, which was conducted live on BT Sport following the conclusion of the Dundee United versus Dunfermline match at Tannadice.

Ton were one of the four unfortunate top-ranked teams to be pulled out away from home, and against a top-flight side to boot.

The tie sees them return to the scene of the most humiliating result in the club’s modern history for the first time since that day.

On May 3 2014, Kenny Shiels’ team were on the end of a disgraceful 10-2 defeat at the hands of Accies on the final afternoon of a campaign that saw them relegated to League One.

The result ushered in a new era at Cappielow, with Shiels resigning and Jim Duffy and Craig McPherson appointed in his place and restoring pride in the subsequent seasons.

Of the team to have played, only Thomas O’Ware, Mark Russell and Derek Gaston, an unused sub, remain at the club, and it will give the trio an opportunity to exorcise any lingering ghosts.

Ties are scheduled to be played on either Tuesday 9 or Wednesday 10 August and the full draw was as follows:
Rangers v Peterhead
Dundee United v Partick Thistle
Celtic v Motherwell
Hamilton Accies v Morton
Hibernian v Queen of the South
St Johnstone v Heart of Midlothian
Alloa Athletic v Inverness Caledonian Thistle
Ayr United v Aberdeen
