THOMAS O’Ware reckons tonight’s return to Hamilton Accies presents Morton with a chance to exorcise the demons of their humiliating 10-2 defeat there just over two years ago.

Defender O’Ware is one of just three current players to have been involved in that crushing loss at New Douglas Park on May 3 2014.

And the 23-year-old views this Betfred Cup tie as an opportunity for the club to purge itself by recording a positive result on their return to the venue.

He told the Tele: “Personally, and as a club, tonight is not about revenge, it’s about restoring a bit of pride.

“From the club’s point of view, as in the name Greenock Morton, that result will be looked to be put to bed.

“But it’s a new bunch of boys now and we’ve done well in this competition so far. To go and win is going to be hard. They’ve just been to Ibrox and got a point, which is a great result.

“Do we believe we can win? Of course. Under Jim Duffy I don’t think we go into any game thinking we’ll get beat. We go into every game with the same mentality to do our jobs and work hard, and if we do our jobs right you never know what the outcome can be.”

O’Ware opened the scoring in Saturday’s Renfrewshire derby and admitted he found St Mirren’s late leveller difficult to stomach.

He said: “It’s crushing. Every time we play them we seem to dominate the game and they always seem to get a way back in it. It was their only real attempt on goal, and it’s just frustrating that it ended in a draw.

"We went there in November and scored in the last minute and it felt like a win.

"But Saturday obviously felt like a defeat. Before the game we would have taken a point, it would have been a good start to the season, but the way it panned out was frustrating.

“We were dominant and there is no doubt that we deserved the three points. We were the better team on the day.”
