MORTON attacker Robert Thomson believes the Ton have a great chance of progressing from their Betfred Cup group.
The Cappielow side have no Premiership opposition in their group, with relegated Partick Thistle, Ayr United, Albion Rovers and Stenhousemuir in their pool.
The competition, which begins on July 14, was something Thomson felt they should have performed better in last season — failing to progress despite finishing second.
All eight group winners make it into the last 16, while four of the best runners up reach the knock-out stages.
But the forward says each team in their pool is likely to change before the season kicks off, especially Morton, who will have a new manager in charge by the time the competition kicks off.
He said: “It looks like a winnable group, but everyone is still finding their feet at the moment.
“Obviously with a new manager to come in, it will be very early into their reign.
"On paper it looks easier and hopefully we’ll get a good run at it and we’ll go further than we did last season, as getting knocked out was disappointing for everyone at the club last year.”
