MORTON goalkeeper Derek Gaston is relishing having another ‘top goalkeeper’ at the club to keep him on his toes this season.

Ex-Partick Thistle shotstopper Ryan Scully was brought in by manager Ray McKinnon last month.

The new Ton boss stated he wanted two top goalkeepers at the club to help push each other for the number one spot and Gaston says Scully has impressed so far in pre-season training.

The 31-year-old knows he can’t get complacent and hopes with Scully pushing him on it will help improve his own performances.

He told the Tele: “It’s always good to have another top goalkeeper at the club for pushing each other.

“It’s easy to get complacent when you’ve got a young boy who is challenging you. You always feel secure in yourself that you will be playing every week.

“Another top goalkeeper makes you work that wee bit harder to try and get to be the number one and playing every
week.

Gaston is sidelined because of a broken wrist and will miss tonight’s closed-door match against Queen’s Park.

He injured his wrist back in April against Dumbarton and has been unable to play since, but he hopes to get positive news when he goes for an X-ray tomorrow.

The Morton custodian says he’s been working hard despite his injury and has been enjoying pre-season training.

He added: “I’m obviously not able to do any of the goalkeeping just now so I’m a wee bit behind, and Ryan’s been really impressive in training and shown what he’s capable of.

“Ray McKinnon has been really impressive with training so far.

“Everyone’s enjoying going in every day and even though you know you’re going in to do a lot of running and hard work it’s been enjoyable.

“It’s the worst time of the season for any footballer, it’s when all the hard work gets done and it’s not as enjoyable as when the season is back up and running.”

Gaston has been impressed with the change in training methods and hopes the small differences will have a big impact on the pitch when the competitive season begins against Ayr United on Saturday.

He said: “The club as a whole has pushed on. We’re all wearing GPS tracking vests for training, we’re making sure we’re eating properly, we’re getting set plans to do in our days off.

“It’s a lot of small things that probably don’t seem significant to other people, but it’s making a really big difference, even stuff like getting recovery shakes after our games, and it all makes a big difference in the long run.

“We’re doing a lot of rehabilitation before training, and a lot of different stretching to help out with injury prevention as well.”
