Patrick McCartney of Greenock Golf Club was recently crowned the winner of the Greenock & District Junior Championship for the second year running.

The Greenock & District Junior Championship is an event that has been running since 1953 and is held at the four Inverclyde golf clubs on a rota basis with Greenock Golf Club (presented in excellent condition) being the host club in 2018. The competition is open to all Junior golfers (under under the age of 18 before the 1st January 2018) who are members of the golf clubs in the ‘Tail o’ the Bank’ area – Cowal, Gleddoch, Gourock, Greenock, Lochwinnoch, Port Glasgow, Skelmorlie and Whinhill Golf Clubs.

All Juniors had to contend with strong winds making scoring really tough.

Patrick's victory was sealed with a solid back nine of 38 (which was great golf, given the blustery conditions) added to a front nine total of 42 for a scratch score of 80 to claim victory by seven clear shots from Alistair McNeil of Skelmorlie Golf Club. Alistair's consolation was in being declared the Under 15’s champion with a fine gross score of 87. The Handicap Section of the event was won by Ross McKay of Gourock Golf Club with an excellent nett score of 70.

A big thanks go to all at Greenock Golf Club for hosting the event.

Congratulations go to Patrick, Alistair & Ross and to all who took part in the Greenock & District Junior Championship.
