BOB McHugh says his half-volley against Ross County was the most satisfying goal of his Morton career to date.

The forward netted Ton’s second in a 2-1 victory over early title favourites Ross County, after initially going behind.
Michael Tidser’s brilliant strike was an almost instant reply to Don Cowie’s opener.

While McHugh has netted 10 times previously for the Ton since joining the club in 2017, his winner, which knocked County off the Championship summit, tops the lot for the former Motherwell frontman.

He told the Tele: “It’s been a while since I’ve scored a winner like that. I’ve scored quite a few over the last few years but it’s been a while since I got that feeling. I tried to enjoy it as much as I could.

“That feeling is what you work so hard for during pre-season, for wee moments like that, and hopefully there are more of them to come this season.

“Those are the sorts of goals I’ve scored all of my career, it’s the one touch in the box and swivelling.

“Those are the goals I really enjoy scoring, a proper striker’s goal, and I’m just delighted to put it in the top corner.”

It was a fairly even first half between the two sides, but McHugh says Morton paid for being sluggish at the start of the second period.

He added: “We played well in the first half, I don’t think there was much in the game and it was end to end.

“But for the first five to 10 minutes in the second half we didn’t start well enough, and they managed to take advantage of that.

“But Tidser came up with a fantastic goal which was very important and that got us back up to speed.

“From then on we deserved to win.”

It was a tough game up front for the striker, with Ross County’s squad littered with big players, as he tried to battle the height difference.

McHugh said: “It was a physical game, it was a really hard shift that the boys put in on Saturday but we’ve got a fit group of lads this year, and I think that showed with the energy and the willingness to defend at the end.

“It was an excellent performance, we knew it was always going to be a tough game.

“The boys gave everything they had and it’s a great three points.”
