MORTON’S head of youth development John Sutton has praised his youngsters for going toe-to-toe against Hibernian’s reserve side.

The Ton were beaten 3-1 by last season’s SPFL League champions and cup winners, but it was a tight game throughout.

With experienced players and international players in the capital club’s ranks, Sutton admitted it was a great testament to his Morton side for being competitive against some high-quality players.

He told the Tele: “I thought the boys played really well. Hibs won the league last year, you had the boy from Man City and the likes of Danny Swanson playing as well.

“It was a tough day but I felt we were more than competitive. I was disappointed the scoreline was 3-1 as I thought the performance was good, we just need to go away and keep improving.

“It would have been a really good game to watch if you were a neutral, there were chances at both ends and it’s a shame we never got our noses in front at any stage.

“I can’t fault the boys in terms of their commitment, and I’m really happy with how they played.”

Sutton also praised the performance of his full-backs Ben Eardley and Darren Hynes, saying their versatility will stand them in good stead for the future.

He added: “Ben’s been brilliant. He can play anywhere on the pitch, the same as Darren.

“I wouldn’t have any hesitation to put them in the centre of midfield or at centre-back.

“They’re young players and they’re learning all the time and from our point of view you just hope they get an opportunity with the first team.”
