GREGOR Buchanan believes being written off in some quarters has played in Morton’s favour.

The Ton surprised many outsiders when they secured a 2-1 win against title favourites Ross County on Saturday.

It continued their unbeaten start to the Championship season ahead of Saturday’s encounter with Partick Thistle at Firhill.

The Morton defender, who joined Ray McKinnon’s side this summer, says training is a great place to be right now, especially with people writing off Ton’s chances of making the promotion play-offs places this season.

He told the Tele: “Any footballer who says they don’t read into these things and doesn’t see them is probably telling lies, because we’re all aware that we’re overlooked from the off.

“But that’s not a bad thing, it can actually spur you on into the right direction and that’s what it has done.

“It gives everyone maybe an extra 10 per cent to try and prove everyone wrong.

“We can only focus on ourselves and taking care of games week by week.

“It’s been a good start to the season and by winning games it makes day-to-day and life at training a lot easier.

“The boys dug in deep and reaped the rewards and it’s a very happy camp at the moment.

“I don’t have any doubts Ross County will be up at the top end of the table, they have very experienced players as you will have seen on Saturday.

“Putting your marker down so early against a team like that was a big point for us.”

Buchanan was part of the St Mirren and Livingston teams that were both promoted to the Premiership.

He played in 20 league games for Saints and Livi last season, only losing three times when he was involved — one of those being Morton’s 4-1 win over St Mirren last August.

From a personal perspective, he’s glad to be back playing regularly again, and is keen to prove any doubters wrong that he is more than capable at Championship level — if not higher.

He added: “The last season I was in and out of the team a bit more than I would have wished for.

“I felt I was performing well any time I wore any team’s jersey.

“I only got beaten about three times in the league last season when I played, so that’s a decent run I’ve managed to bring into this season and I wanted to play more regularly, that’s my nature.

“When you’re on the bench all the time it’s hard to take, and I wanted to come to Morton and play football week in, week out to prove to myself and anybody doubting me that I am more than capable at this level at the minimum.

“It’s been good to get a run of games so far, and long may it continue.”
