HE’S Morton’s longest serving player, but goalkeeper Derek Gaston insists he’s never seen anything like the Ray McKinnon saga at the club.

After a whirlwind few days at Cappielow the Ton are now managerless, with management duo of McKinnon and his number two Darren Taylor leaving for Falkirk on Friday.

There were no rumours even surfacing of the move until Friday afternoon.

The move then escalated quickly, with the Bairns confirming McKinnon as the new manager later that evening.

While there have been times in the past Gaston has caught on or known about managers coming or going, he said there was no indication that the pair would leave at all.

He told the Tele: “This is the first instance where I’ve not had any inkling to the management team leaving.

“It’s easy enough to pick up the phone and or even dropping a text to players or even speaking to the captain of the club.

“It’s easy for them to pick up the phone and explain the reason why they left.

“That’s one of the most annoying things about it, as there’s not been an explanation about it all.

“You could maybe understand it all if it was a Premiership team or if it was a bigger team and the opportunity was too good to turn down.

“It’s not really a bigger step up, it’s more of a sideway step to move to Falkirk at this moment in time.”

The players all had a day off yesterday, with 12 days until their next competitive fixture, an away trip to Tannadice to take on Dundee United.

Head of performance Graeme Henderson, also a UEFA A licence holder, as well as Morton’s senior players, are expected to take training this week, while the club looks for a replacement.

But Gaston, who took part in yesterday’s reserve game, where the Ton drew 0-0 away to Queen of the South at Palmerston, will be away studying for his UEFA B licence for the rest of the week.

He added: “I’m supposed to be doing my B licence this week, so I took a day off from it yesterday and I’m in during the rest of the week.

“As a goalkeeper you need to do the B licence before you can get the goalkeeping licence.

“I’ve got a couple more weeks later in the year as well before I complete it.”
