JOHN Sutton has hailed his Morton Reserves’ ‘fantastic’ performance after they beat Celtic’s second string team 3-1 at Cappielow.

The result moved Morton up to fifth in the Reserve League One after four games and Sutton, pictured, was full of praise for his side’s display against the Scottish champions’ reserves.

He told the Tele: “The boys did really well. Celtic are a very good team.

“As a player, if you play in the top leagues, you straight away look for Celtic or Rangers.

“It’s a step up for the boys this year in the Reserve League and there was huge excitement about playing them. From our point of view it was absolutely fantastic and I don’t think I’m going over the top either in saying that it was well deserved.

“We looked comfortable and could have had a few more, there are some good players and there’s no doubt about it.

“Sometimes you can never tell how the results are going to go, but the boys gave it everything they’ve got and they got what they deserved.”

Sutton also reserved praise for Derek Gaston, with the first team goalkeeper making a string of key saves in the second half to keep the Ton’s two-goal advantage intact.

He added: “We’re lucky we had big Gats in goal because he makes things look easy a lot of the time.

“There was some pressure but the back four can be pleased.

“There wasn’t anything clear-cut but when we look back at the video we’ll look at the things we can do better and it’s up to us to keep improving and hopefully some of the boys will get a shot in the first team and they’ll be ready for it.”
