Ryan Christie insisted that there is no place in football for Dolly Menga’s behaviour after the Livingston striker was caught on camera headbutted him during the 0-0 draw at the Tony Macaroni Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking after signing a new three-year deal with Celtic yesterday afternoon, Christie revealed he was caught entirely off-guard when Menga stuck his head onto him as the duo tussled in the Livingston penalty box.

"That is the thing we want to cut that kind of thing out of football completely and rightly so,” said Christie. If they have seen something then it is surprising that he has not been shown a red card.”

Referee Kevin Clancy spoke to both players without cautioning either and it remains to be seen if there is a retrospective ban handed out to Menga.

"That is up to them not me,” said the 23-year-old. “It is completely gone now for me.

"If it affected the game that is another matter. It will be interesting to see what happens now and if they do anything.

"There was no build up to it or anything like that and it just came out of nowhere,” he said.

"It took me by surprise and it took me a few seconds to realise that he has just put the head on me.

"I didn't know if any of the officials had seen it or not. The referee called us both over which made me think that he had seen it as there was nothing else to be seen other than that. He gave us both a talking to and is not up to me to make these decisions.

"I didn't get much of a talking to and I thought if the referee had seen it then it would be a red card. I thought he had seen something because he gave him (Menga) a right talking to but no action was taken.

"The referee told us both to calm down and said to him to especially calm down and that he was watching him which kind of suggested that it was more him than me that was up to something.”

Certainly, though, Christie was taken aback when he felt the player butt him in the side of the head.

Popular Sky Sports television show Soccer Am tweeted a snapshot of the incident yesterday claiming that Christie’s reaction was that of a “typical Scotsman.”

The short clip caught the surprise of the Celtic player as contact was made and Christie revealed he was more shocked than anything else.

"I can't remember what I said to him it was something like 'what are you doing' as it was a strange one,” he said.

"I have seen it back and it comes out of nowhere.

"There is always pushing and shoving incidents like that at corners and free-kicks and that is part of the game now so I didn't really think that he had much reason to do something like that.

"I was never going to go rolling down on the ground because it didn't hurt me.”

In any case, the incident was never going to take the gloss off of the contract extension that Christie signed yesterday afternoon.

"It’s nice to get it all sorted and put to the back of my mind," said the Scotland internationalist. "Now I can focus on my football. It’s come at the end of a nice period for me. I’d like to kick on now.

"We had been in talks for two or three weeks and I’m delighted to get it over the line ahead of a big run of games in December.

“I’ve enjoyed my football ever since I’ve come to the club.

"The manager’s been brilliant with me and I’ve really enjoyed playing under him and working with all the staff. I have a really positive feeling right now and I’m enjoying my football at Celtic."
