MORTON head of development John Sutton says his side’s 2-0 defeat to Motherwell on Monday was an ‘eye-opener’.

The Ton had several first-team players involved in the game at Cappielow, but were outclassed by Stephen Craigan’s side who took an early lead from Alex Rodriguez-Gorrin’s penalty.

The Ton only had a few chances in the game, with Rory McKeown shooting wide from a free-kick late in the first half.

The visitors sealed the three points late on through Jake Hastie, who is on loan at Alloa Athletic this season and helped win one of their penalties against the Ton on Saturday, fired in Motherwell’s second.

Sutton told the Tele: “I can’t fault the boys’ effort. Motherwell are a good team and that’s the level we’ve got to get up to and it’s a real eye-opener for us.

“We can’t fault the effort levels but we were lacking that physicality and that little bit of quality.

“You have to go away and take your medicine and keep working on it, as there’s certainly talent in our group.

“When we did get some passes going we did okay but we didn’t deserve to win the game, so we go away and hopefully the boys keep on getting better. That’s the level we want to try and get to and we want to get there as quick as we can.”
