MORTON goalkeeper Derek Gaston says his side are more than capable of winning against the ‘best team in the league’ in Ross County at Cappielow.

Tonight's clash will be televised live on BBC Alba, the first game to be played across Scotland in 2019.

The Staggies are sitting top of the Championship, three points clear of Ayr United in second, as they look to bounce straight back up to the Premiership.

They have only lost twice this season, but one of those defeats came at the hands of Morton back at Cappielow in August.

The Ton goalkeeper hopes his side can punish the Highland outfit again on their home turf.

He told the Tele: “For me they’re the best team in the league and it will be a difficult game.

“But if we play better than we did on Saturday there’s every chance we’ll take the three points.

“Especially at home, they’ve got a long trip down and we need take advantage of that.

“We managed to do that last time out at Cappielow when we beat them and we’ll be looking to repeat that again.”

A result against the Staggies would help solidify Morton’s own hopes of promotion this season.

The Ton are one point off the play-offs, and have a chance to move back into fourth with a victory, as they play ahead of the other teams in the division.

Their 2-1 win over Partick Thistle on Saturday gave some breathing space from the bottom as well, moving 11 points clear of the relegation play-off spot.

While Morton’s aim was always higher than that this season, Gaston says it’s nice to see progress being made.

He added: “We’re always looking up and we’re looking to get involved in the battle for the play-offs.

“When you don’t get those wins you’re starting to peek over your shoulder thinking if you don’t get a win here or there then you’ll get dragged down towards the bottom.

“You can even get cast adrift from the top and the bottom, and be in a situation where you’re sitting sixth in the table and you’re not near the play-offs but far away from the bottom of the table as well.

“Hopefully we can build on the three points from Saturday.”
