MORTON’S Jim McAlister admits he’s happy to fill in at centre-back if needed for the season ahead.

The Ton currently have no central defenders signed up for the new campaign, but still have a few weeks before the campaign starts.

The club have had ex-Ton loanee Kerr Waddell, who was released by Dundee, and ex-Falkirk and Brechin City defender Ryan McGeever at Cappielow on trial.

The Greenock outfit can use trialists in their upcoming pre-season games away to Forfar and at home to St Johnstone.

But for the Betfred Cup games, which start on July 16 for the Ton, they can only use players who are contracted to the club.

McAlister, who usually plays in midfield but filled in at the end of last year by playing at centre-back, says he will be happy to do it again if required.

He told the Tele: “It will boil down to whether the manager can get the centre-halves in, and you know that is the main focus of his attention now as he’s pretty well covered in all the other areas.

“The budget has been cut, there’s going to be less numbers and he was looking for players to cover multiple positions, and if I need to play at the back then I’ll give it my best shot, and if it was in midfield it would be the same again.”
