NEW St Johnstone man Craig Conway has revealed he almost signed for Rangers when Ally McCoist was Ibrox boss.

Conway, who instead continued his career south of the border with Cardiff City, Blackburn Rovers and Brighton, could have moved to Ibrox when his contract was up with Dundee United in 2011.

But the 35-year-old who joined Saints this summer says he does not hold any regrets at turning McCoist down.

Speaking to The Scottish Sun, he said: “I backed myself to go down south and I loved every minute of it so I’ve no regrets.

“Ally is a legend and a great guy. I remember sitting having tea and toast with him. He’s a real character. I was genuinely close to signing.

“It was before they had their financial issues. It was to play in the top flight.”

Conway went on to forge out a successful career in England and Wales, including a five year spell at Blackburn in which he made nearly 200 appearances.

Following a stint with Salford City last year he became one of Callum Davidson’s first signings at McDiarmid Park this summer.

Saints travel to face Rangers at Ibrox tonight after their match against Aberdeen at the weekend was postponed.

Eight Aberdeen players had broken coronavirus regulations to go on a night out after their opening day defeat to Rangers, causing the game to be called off.

Despite having not played since the opening day, Saints' manager Callum Davidson believes his side can put up a good fight against Steven Gerrard’s men tonight.

He said: “Obviously they (Rangers) have had a lot of games, more than we have had, but I think we are in a good enough condition to compete.

“The one positive is we managed to get three or four players back fit again, so losing Saturday wasn’t bad on that front.

“I was disappointed at missing a game. It’s something we knew was going to happen at times. “Rangers have been really good, I saw them at the weekend and thought they were very good against Aberdeen too.

“When you go to Ibrox or Celtic Park you need all your players to play well, especially when they are full of confidence after two wins.

“But hopefully we can put in a really good performance and see where it takes us.”
