GREENOCK footballer Nicky Jamieson says he'll cherish knocking Hearts out the League Cup for the rest of his life - and has backed Morton to pull off another shock against the Jambos.

Jamieson, who joined Peter Grant’s Alloa in the summer from Queen's Park, believes that the Wasps were more than a match for Robbie Neilson's men and stung them when it mattered thanks to former Morton man Alan Trouten’s penalty midway through extra time.

The former Ton academy starlet put in a dominant display in his maiden home game against a potent Hearts front line and hopes that his local side can inflict more misery on the Championship favourites this weekend.

He told the Tele: “It was a great result for us and everyone was delighted, especially as it’s Hearts so a lot of people will have had us as underdogs.

“The game could have gone so differently, because I fouled Liam Boyce and the ref thought that it was outside the box when it probably was inside, so I got away with one.

"I needed that bit of luck to go my way to really get myself going.

“If I’d given it away then it would’ve been hard to bounce back from but thankfully, we went and kicked on from there and Alan Trouten tucked his spot-kick away when it mattered.

“I thought that the game was destined for penalties because Hearts didn’t look like scoring at all.

“After the first half they just stopped creating, they had a lot of the ball but it was one of those ones where they were just passing it back and forth and eventually putting a ball into the box but it was just going out the park.

“We felt pretty comfortable in the second half. We were doing a lot of running and the dirty work, chasing shadows in a way, but we were more than a match for them and we frustrated them a lot.

“It was a great experience for me, probably one of the best of my career so far.

“Craig Wighton then came on as well as Steven Naismith and I remember that I was struggling with around 20 or so minutes to go because it was my one of my first games in nearly eight weeks.

“It was adrenaline that got me through the extra time but I remember being absolutely knackered and looked across to the side and Steven Naismith was about to come on and it was a bit surreal.

“Naismith had played against us during the week on the Tuesday, so they started with [Liam] Boyce up front, who’s obviously had a great career and is an internationalist for his country, but they’ve got players like that littered throughout the team.

“It makes it an even greater achievement for us.

“I thought we deserved the win because to a man we were excellent.

“I can't give too much tactics away to a direct rival obviously, but I hope that Morton do well against them as it’s a huge game for them.”

Jamieson admits the only disappointment was not being able to celebrate together with his team-mates in the dressing room after the game due to social distancing guidelines.

But he is relishing facing Hearts' captial rivals Hibs in the quarter-final.

He said: “As much as it was a great result it was kind of ruined by the situation that we find ourselves in because normally everyone would be buzzing in the changing room afterwards.

“This time around we’ve all had to get changed in four separate dressing rooms because of social distancing. It just took the buzz out of it a wee bit.

“Regardless of that, it was a great result for Alloa to get through to the next round of the League Cup and to get Hibs in the next round.”
