MORTON player-coach Chris Millar believes that the Championship will be played to a finish after insisting that everyone at the club wants the season to continue.

The 37-year-old has today given his views on the letter sent out by SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell asking clubs if they were open to stopping all fixtures.

The league looks likely to continue, with clubs believed to have unanimously agreed on that decision before Monday’s deadline.

The Ton veteran insists that the Covid-19 protocols in place at Cappielow are doing their job and says that he feels safer when at training than when carrying out day-to-day essential chores outside of work.

He told the Tele: “It’s been a really enjoyable six or seven weeks having more responsibilities as a player-coach.

"It’s one of the reasons why I want the season to keep on going.

“I think the boys have responded really well to it and myself, Jim [McAlister], Brian [McLean] and Anton [McElhone] think it’s been good. We’ll just need to see how things are come the end of the season.

“We just need to keep doing what we’re doing and whatever happens will happen.

“Personally, for us as players and as coaches, you want to come in and do your work.

“As soon as it was put to us, we wanted to finish the season, no questions asked.

“I can totally understand that people’s health and safety is paramount but when you look at it, footballers are going to be some of the most-low risk people because of their physical health.

“I think if a group of us were to get it then most of us would recover pretty well purely down to our fitness levels.

“You can understand people’s concerns but for me I wanted to finish the season and I still do and it looks like it’s going to be that way as well.

“There are protocols that are in place to minimise any outbreaks and obviously there are going to be times when players get cases, but that’s why these protocols are there, to minimise it as much as possible.

“I know the club have been doing as much as they can to do that as well. I’d go as far to say I feel safer at training than I do going shopping.”

McElhone believes season should continue

Millar admitted that Ton have been left frustrated at the results over the last couple of weeks, despite going five games unbeaten after a 0-0 draw against Dunfermline on Friday.

He believes that it shows the mentality of the dressing room as they look to get back to winning ways against Queen of the South on Saturday after a run of three draws.

He said: “We’ve been a bit disappointed about the last couple of results, I think because we’ve taken the lead and then been held back one way or another.

“On Friday we were a bit frustrated because the performance in the second half wasn’t what we were used to. We usually have a bit more energy and are a lot more involved in the game.

“Dunfermline pinned us back in the second half and fair play to them, they’re a good team, but for us and for how we’ve been doing we were frustrated, all things considered.

“We’ve actually had to tell the players that there are reasons for the drop in performance.

“We haven’t trained due to the weather, cancellations of games and we’d only had two sessions last week.

“I think it shows you the mindset of the boys and where we’re at as a group. We’ve trained this week at a high intensity, so we’ve got to cultivate that frustration and put it into our performances on a Saturday.

“The Queens game is one where we know we can go and get a result if we play to our full potential.”
