MORTON defender Michael Ledger has admitted he’ll have to be at the top of his game to keep in-form Connor Shields at bay when they face Queen of the South tomorrow.

Ex-Doonhamer Ledger says he is fully aware of the threat that the former Sunderland man carries.

The 23-year-old is looking forward to the challenge of coming up against Shields - who has netted seven goals in his last five games for Queens - should he be deployed on the left.

Ledger admitted that returning to Palmerston for the first time since leaving has given him an ‘extra buzz' going into the game, but he insists his sole focus is on coming up the road with three points.

He told the Tele: “We’re aware of the threat that Connor Shields carries, he’s in good form so we’ll have to keep an eye on him and make sure he has a quiet game.

“If he’s playing on the left then he’ll be my responsibility to try and make sure that he has a quiet game, which will be a good challenge for me and it’s a challenge that I’ll be ready for.

“It’s clear to see that he’s their main threat at the minute but they’ve got other players in the team too who can cause us problems.

“But I'm sure that if we keep him quiet, then we’ve got a good chance of coming away with three points.

“I’m looking forward to going back down to Palmerston for the first time.

“It’ll be nice to go back, even though I wasn’t really there for very long.

“It gives you an extra buzz when you play an old team, but it’s just another game and my focus is just on getting a clean sheet, three points and continuing this run for Morton.

“It’s been nice to get a good week’s training under our belts because the last couple of weeks have been murder in trying to get stuff done.

“It’s been stop-start but we’re just looking forward to getting the games played.

“It’s frustrating when you can’t train, but what can you do?

“Some things are just out of our control, like the weather and Covid, but we just need to get on with it.

“This week has been a lot more normal, training has been good.”

Ledger branded tomorrow's encounter as a ‘must win’ game if Ton have serious aspirations to finish in the play-off places.

He believes that his team-mates will find their goalscoring touch again and has backed the likes of Kalvin Orsi and Aidan Nesbitt to find that missing link.

He believes that the game is the perfect opportunity to end Ton’s run of four draws on the bounce.

He said: “I’d say tomorrow is a must win game for us, with the run we’ve been on.

“In the last few games, we’ve come away disappointed with the fact that we drew, we want to start winning games so I think it’s a big game for us, especially if we want to keep our place in the top four.

“We need to be going to places like Palmerston and coming away with three points, draws are good up until a certain point and then that’s when you really need to step up and get three points.

“We just need to start creating chances and we’ve been working on it in training, we’ve got players who can do it in Nizzy and Kalvin, so this is a good chance for us to do that.”
