MORTON winger Craig McGuffie is aiming to break into Anton McElhone’s first-team plans — starting tonight against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The 22-year-old impressed alongside fellow substitute Rabin Omar in the 2-1 reverse to Queen of the South on Saturday and he hopes that the performance has given his boss something to think about.

With a congested fixture list coming up and McElhone looking to shuffle his pack against the Highlanders, McGuffie wants to show what he can do from the start tonight against the Caley Jags.

He told the Tele: “I came on on Saturday and did well, despite the game not going in our favour.

“The team had been doing brilliantly up until that point and that’s really the first blip we’ve had under Anton, so I don’t think we’ll be looking too much into it.

“It was probably the most amount of time that I’ve had on the park to actually try and contribute and I think I did alright.

“I’m feeling confident and while there are still things that I know I can improve on, that just comes with playing more games, things like being calmer on the ball.

“Hopefully I can get some more games under my belt now and really kick on from that.

“I’ve been sitting and waiting for a chance for a while and you’ve got to take it when one comes up, so hopefully one can come up over the next few games and I can maybe get a start.

David Hopkin: 'I quit Morton after being told which players to axe'

“I’m feeling good. Rab [Rabin Omar] and I were told to bring some energy to the game and I think we did that and we were unlucky not to take something considering the second-half performance.

“It was a good run we were on but we can’t afford to look too much into it.”

McGuffie believes that Ton have the perfect opportunity to put Saturday’s disappointment behind them when they face John Robertson’s men tonight.

He believes that with three home games coming up, it allows Ton to get back on track as they look to push towards the play-off places again.

He said: “It’s good we’ve got a few games coming up because we can put the Queen of the South defeat out of our system.

“Inverness haven’t played in a wee while, they’ve had games cancelled quite a lot recently.

“Hopefully we can take advantage of that and make the most of them not having the same levels of match sharpness that we’ve got.

“We’ve got three home games in a row, so we’ve got a good chance to put the weekend’s result behind us.

“Everyone can beat everyone in this league, so it’s good that we’re right back into a game tonight to try and pick up some steam again.”
