CAMERON Salkeld hopes that he can provide an unexpected spearhead to Anton McElhone’s attack for the final 10 games of the campaign.

The Englishman has been deployed as a lone striker in the past few games and admits that he is growing into the role more and more as the weeks go by.

While he is learning on the job, the 22-year-old is demanding more from himself as he looks to provide a new goalscoring outlet and help his side move further away from the relegation zone when they take on Ayr tomorrow.

He told the Tele: “I’m really enjoying playing up front.

"I’ve played there a few times now against Alloa, Dundee and St Mirren before coming back in there against Hearts and Dundee again.

“Hopefully with 10 games left I can kick on but the main thing for me is that I need to start scoring goals.

“When you play up front you’re the one people look to to score goals, so it’s up to me to try and do that.

“That could work to my advantage, though, as I'm not usually expected to play through the middle, so hopefully I can surprise a few folk and do well between now and the end of the season.

“I really enjoy playing through the middle, probably more than out wide really, purely because you get more chances and see more of the ball.

“On another day, I think I would do better with the two chances that I had against Dundee.

“I’ve come in and I just need to keep listening and learning - I’m learning on the job.

“You’ve had guys come in and play their full careers in certain positions, that’s all they’ve played whilst this is a bit new to me. So I’m taking in as much advice as possible, even from guys like Uncle Bri [Brian McLean] if he’s marking me in small games in training.

“You normally associate games against Ayr as a big game because they’re the team that are closest to us in the league geographically but when you look at what’s on the line this weekend, that just amplifies that.

“You’ve seen it on a matchday, if you score, you’re jumping something like three or four places in the league depending on what’s happening elsewhere.

“It just shows you how tight things are and if we want to be getting into the top four like we say, then every game from here on is a big game for us and we want to be winning all of them.

“Ayr are obviously a team that’s round about us and breathing down our necks and we want to be doing that to everyone else.”

Salkeld feels Morton still have unfinished business from last season after the season was stopped due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

He believes that a top four finish would be the perfect way to repay the fans for their unwavering support during the most testing of times.

He said: “We’ve got 10 games left so we need to try and pick up as many points as we can.

“It was around this time last year that the league was stopped, so hopefully this could be the weekend where we start that run back up that we were on at that time and finish off what we started and get into the play-offs.

“Once we get one win, I think that will set us on our way because we’ve been so close on a few occasions and we’ve played well.

“To achieve that would be a really nice way to round off a tough year for everyone, especially the fans.

“That’s a full season they’ve not been in for now, which is unacceptable. They’ve had the streams but it’s not the same.

“We’ve missed them and they’ve missed us so hopefully we can replay them with a play-off finish.”
