AIDAN Nesbitt says the ‘weight of the world’ has lifted off his shoulders following his strike in Morton’s vital win over Inverness.

In only their second victory at Caledonian Stadium, Ton lifted themselves out of the relegation play-off zone and into sixth place, leapfrogging their opponents in the process.

An emotional Nesbitt believes that he and his team-mates have been able to turn a corner after achieving their first win in 10.

The winger hopes that he can hit the heights that many expected of him from now on off the back of his match-winner.

He told the Tele: “It’s a funny old game. I feel as if the weight of the world has been taken off of my shoulders after scoring that.

“We all felt really disappointed after the result on Saturday - it was the worst I’d ever felt after a game in my time here - and three days later we’ve been able to go and change that. We must kick on now.

“The boys are really relieved and now what we need to do is go out on Saturday and build on it because I think we’ve been dwelling on games lately, which might not have helped us.

“We all want to win as much as anyone else, we all care and we’re all passionate about it – we all work so hard.

“We just needed the win and a bit of confidence and thankfully we got it.

“You saw what the goal did, it gave us such a boost. I think I beat a full-back for the first time in a fortnight after that - I felt as if I had skis on for the rest of the game!

“That’s what you need sometimes as a team and a player, hopefully we can make the most of it.

“There are so many excuses that we could’ve used on Tuesday if we’d been beat like the bus journey, the weather and things like that but we rolled our sleeves up and got on with it, that just sums this group of boys up.

“For me personally, I’ve been playing a lot of football recently, which has been great – but I’ve not been near the standard I want to be at and that’s the face of it.

“I work hard every day and I work hard in games, but the quality hasn’t been there.

“Even on Saturday, I was sitting thinking about the simple things I would normally be doing and they hadn’t gone my way, so to get that against Caley has felt like the weight has come off my shoulders.

“I know as a player I haven’t been good enough and nowhere near what fans expect from me, I hope the goal gives me a platform to reignite that, because I want to do well for the team.”

Nesbitt revealed the mood inside the dressing room has been lifted after the result and says they are now relishing the final eight games of the campaign.

He said: “This is a massive win for us. You just need to look at the likes of Queen of the South and Arbroath and the runs that they’ve been on.

“At this stage of the season it’s important that we try and match that and this is the perfect opportunity for that.

“It’s a must that we go and build on this and go on a run because it’s so simple, a win lifts the whole mood in the dressing room and changes the dynamics of the mentality.

“We’re all looking forward to the last eight games now.”
