MORTON made sure that their place in the Scottish Cup fourth round was secured — but they needed extra-time to do so after a Sean McGinty penalty and Robbie Muirhead’s wonder strike saw off brave East Fife.

Another cup shock at the hands of Darren Young’s men was on the cards after veteran striker Kevin Smith put the hosts ahead on the stroke of the hour mark.

They were worthy of their advantage before Ton’s pressure eventually paid off after Fifers’ defender Ross Dunlop was adjudged to have handled the ball in the 90th minute.

Skipper McGinty took the game to extra time from the spot before Muirhead’s fantastic finish sealed the win with nine minutes to play — and avoided a repeat of Ton’s 2019 Methil defeat.
