KYLE Jacobs believes Morton can cause a League Cup shock by beating Kilmarnock to top spot in their section.

The midfielder is relishing the prospect of Ton going head-to-head with the Group G favourites at Rugby Park on July 20 and is aiming to pull off a surprise result in Ayrshire.

Ton reached the last 16 of the League Cup under David Hopkin two years ago and the South African hopes they can enjoy another run in the tournament as they look to build momentum ahead of their Championship campaign kicking off on July 31.

He told the Tele: “When you compare some of the groups, there are some really tough ones in there this season, so I think we’ve got a really good draw.

“I’m quite happy with our group because, and I mean this with no disrespect to the other teams, we should be looking to come out of that group quite strongly.

“We should be challenging Kilmarnock for top spot, so I’m really looking forward to being able to try and do just that as well as the other players are I’m sure.

“Winning the group is achievable because Killie are doing a rebuild of their own, so we could maybe catch them on a bad day and you never know what could happen.

“Then you’ve got the other teams from the divisions below who we are expected to go out and do well against.

“We’ll have to be at our best against them but I think we’re more than capable.

“It’ll be a tough group but it’s one that realistically we should be doing well in."

Jacobs believes that Ton are only a few tweaks away from challenging up the top end of the table in what he predicts will be a tight league this season.

He insists that a few more goals added to the team with the strong feeling of vindication amongst the group of last season’s players, Ton could have what it takes to be a surprise package.

He added: “The players who have signed will have the bit between their teeth this time around as there is obviously quite a lot we could improve on at the top end of the park. We didn’t score enough goals last year, we need to do better on that front.

“Defensively, though, I thought that we were quite good and I thought we did well.

“I’m sure that the gaffer will have us working on that over the course of pre-season and bring in a few people to help us out in that area going forward.

“It’s going to be a tight league, with no clear front runners, and it’s a nice change with two teams coming down.

“If we can get a good start in the league then who knows what could happen."
