MICHAEL Ledger believes having fans back inside Cappielow will give Morton a physiological edge next season.

The defender played in front of the Cappielow support just once last season due to Covid-19 restrictions and says the atmosphere had a galvanising effect in the play-off final victory over Airdrie.

The 23-year-old knows the Ton faithful can make a trip to Sinclair Street a daunting prospect after making his debut there for Queen of the South in 2019-20.

Ledger can't wait to play in front of a home support next term and believes the intimidating atmosphere can give Ton a secret weapon.

He told the Tele: “The Airdrie game was immense, not only because we won but because the fans were in as well to support us.

“It’s not been the same without them and we played at some really nice stadiums last season away from home, it put a dampener on things a little bit.

“Cappielow is a great ground to play in, especially when the fans are in.

“I obviously made my debut in Scotland at Cappielow, so I know as an away player just how intimidating that it can be.

“The fans are right on top of you, so I can't wait to have that backing me this time around and hopefully we can use that to our advantage this season. They were sorely missed last time around.

“Having the fans back in and having them behind us will only help us improve as a team, I have no doubt about that.

“I’m counting down the days now until we’re back and I’m glad to be sorted out for next season.

“It’s promising to be a cracker.”

Ledger admits that he is one of the lucky ones after securing a new deal in the midst of the pandemic, with many players still out of work.

Despite interest from elsewhere, the ex-Sunderland youngster was in no doubt he wanted to stay at Morton.

He said: “I know how hard it is for some boys to get a club just now, so I really am happy to be sorted here and to get going again.

“It had been such a long season that I’d taken a week off just to switch off and forget about football for a short time.

“As soon as Morton were on the phone to me, which they were quick to do, it was an easy decision to make, even though there were other options out there.

“I had a good chat with the manager and despite there being phone calls from other clubs, Morton made me feel the most wanted so it’s now up to me to repay that."
