MORTON frontman Robbie Muirhead says he's confident he can hit a goal rush this season after opening his account early.

The 25-year-old finished last season with three crucial goals in the play-off final against Airdrie and picked up where he left off on Saturday with a brace against Clyde.

The former Scotland youth international feels his new-found confidence in front of goal is down to being settled at Cappielow and playing as an out-and-out striker under boss Gus MacPherson.

Muirhead now wants to continue his rich vein of form as Ton begin their Championship campaign against Dunfermline and he believes he can form a potent partnership with team-mates Gozie Ugwu and Gary Oliver.

He told the Tele: “I am really happy to have got off the mark with a couple of goals to really get the season started.

“I wanted to pick up from where I left off at the end of last season and hopefully that can continue.

“The league is going to be even tighter than it was last year, you’ve got two teams coming down from the Premiership and a strong Partick side coming up as well.

“Hopefully we get off to a good start and anything can happen over the next nine months. It’ll be a rollercoaster but that’s what football is all about.

“I never wanted to leave the club because I’ve enjoyed my time here so far.

“I might not have played as much up top or as well as I know I can, but I’m very settled here and that’s a big thing for me, so I didn’t need much convincing from the gaffer.

"Hopefully being settled means that I can continue to perform to a level that I know I can and like I have been recently.

“I’ve not set any targets or anything like that – it’s not really my style.

“I just want see what happens and take it from there and in all honesty that’s the way I live life, you can’t afford to put too much pressure on yourself.

“Everything happens for a reason, I’ve started to find the back of the net so long may that continue.

“We missed a player like Goz last season in all honesty. He’s a target man that you can play in and around of.

“It might sound funny that, coming from a guy who's 6ft 3 like myself but I think the three of us - myself, Gozie and Gary Oliver - will all play well together if selected in the starting 11.

“We’ve played well in the League Cup considering the circumstances. We might have not scored the most goals but a lot of boys haven’t played together.

“Obviously we’ve missed 10 days so we’re still a bit behind but it’s all falling into place, so hopefully that translates into having a good season as opposed to last year."

Muirhead has been impressed by the young players who stepped up to the plate during Ton's Covid-disrupted Premier Sports Cup group campaign.

He was full of admiration for the youngsters, who had been placed in cold storage last season due to the pandemic, and he believes that they could have a part to play in Ton’s campaign.

The ex-Kilmarnock striker also feels having the fans back will have a positive impact on their performance.

He added: "The youth players have done really well, considering some of them wouldn’t have played many games over the last 18 months because of Covid and as a result the reserve league getting cancelled.

“So here’s hoping they can keep improving and impressing.

“Obviously games last season with no fans at times you can fall into a trap that the games are not important and become slow-paced.

“Sometimes you need a reaction from the crowd to get the team going again or the crowd showing appreciation for what they are seeing on the pitch.

“But I’m delighted to have them back in. We missed the noise and buzz back around the ground and I’m sure that’ll be a big thing for us going forward.”
