GOZIE Ugwu insists it's only a matter of time before his search for his first Morton goal comes to an end as he aims to gun down former club Dunfermline on Saturday.

The 28-year-old striker has impressed in pre-season with his hold-up play and has been unlucky not to find the back of the net on a few occasions.

Despite the Englishman failing to find the net, he is keen to look at the positives and believes he is on the right path to success at Cappielow as he gears up for the league opener against the Pars.

He told the Tele: “There’s always that excitement in the build-up to the first league game. It just so happens to be against an old team in Dunfermline on Saturday.

“You’re always itching to get going but you can’t rush these things because you need to get your match fitness and cohesiveness throughout the team by playing together.

“We’ve done that well in the circumstances and we’ve stuck together in a tight knit squad, including all the staff, and we’re taking each game as it comes.

“I feel like I’ve done everything bar score yet – I’ve hit the post a couple of times, the crossbar and had some good pieces of play in and around the box.

“The chance where I hit the bar against East Kilbride was probably the first time I’ve touched the ball in the game as well as the chance in the last friendly against Cumbernauld Colts being one of my first touches too, so it’s just one of those things.

“I’m happy to be getting into the right positions to get on the end of those chances because it’s one thing not putting them away but it’s not good for the type of striker that I am to not be getting the chances in the first place or getting into those positions.

“I’m not focusing on that part of things too much in all honesty, because that’s when you start trying too hard and making mistakes.

“It’s all going to be about being able to play a part in the time like I have and putting a performance in for the fans and the gaffer.

“If I can continue to do that then the goals will follow – I’m a firm believer in that.”

Ugwu says his start to life at Cappielow has been made easier by the close bond within the group.

He believes that the bond forming between the squad will help Ton when it matters most and the pressure is at its highest.

He said: “Pre-season had it’s challenges but that just happens in football all the time in different circumstances.

“All that matters is when you cross that white line you forget about the noise in the background and just give it everything and that’s what we have done in the games that we’ve played. I think you can see that we’ve played well.

“First and foremost, we just focus on getting the job done as best as we can on the pitch.

“A really tight dressing room can win us points during the season and it’s something I noticed straight away, how welcoming and close everybody is. That isn't just the squad, it is the backroom staff as well.

“Everyone is so close together and that can only be a positive because when it gets down to the nitty gritty that closeness is definitely going to help us out in those tough situations.”
