NEW Morton general manager Chris Ross has revealed it is time to 'go back to basics' as he looks to unleash the potential of the club.

Mr Ross took over the new role at the club on Tuesday and will oversee the day-to-day operations in line with the vision of incoming owners Morton Club Together.

He comes to Cappielow having worked with clubs in England, Scotland and American as a consultant and has also provided consultancy support to charitable trusts and foundations, including Greenock Morton Community Trust.

The 25-year-old has promised fans that key components of their matchday experiences will improve as he looks to attract supporters of yesteryear back to the terraces of Sinclair Street.

He told the Tele: “I am absolutely delighted to have been given the role and I can't wait to get started.

“I think it’s a really exciting time to be getting involved with the club like this and MCT were a really big driving factor in my decision-making for applying for the general manager’s role.

“It really is as simple as going back to basics from here as we look to build the club up and move forward.

“I’ll do a full audit and look at every key component at the club from ticketing to matchday experience. These are the things that we need to be getting right and we’ll see what we can do to make fans happy as well - we really need to listen to them.

“I’m a bit of a well-travelled man for my age and I’ve been here, there and everywhere for the last couple of years.

“Instead of holding down a full-time role over the last couple of years I’ve served as more of a consultant doing maybe a day here or there, in at clubs helping them out with their governance and operations, aiding with their development.

“Morton is somewhere I can come back and focus on the one role and combine all of the learning I’ve had from elsewhere and really try to put my own stamp on things – focusing on the one club and developing my own remit.

“This is one big project for me and we’re all fully focused in growing the club and moving it forward.

“I’ve obviously had chats with the current board, and we’ve outlined some of the initial priorities inside the first 100 days.

“You can expect me to be helping the staff out, who’ve been working flat out over the last six months.

“The club obviously haven’t had anybody in this role since the transition of the previous chief executive, so I’ll help reduce the workload of the staff, some of the workload of the board, and I’ll be looking to increase key things such as comms, matchday experience and all of those key drivers within the club. We’re looking to improve those.

“Morton are a massive club with such a history about them, there’s a giant here that’s waiting to be taken to the next level.

“We’re obviously heading into this massive year and you’ve seen the noise surrounding it with the kits.

“There’s a massive history here and I’ve got previous experience in Inverclyde having helped out with the community trust as a consultant.

“You look at the population of Inverclyde and the potential around Greenock – a lot of people won't have been at the game but people will always be asking how Morton have got on that day.

“We really need to drive and pick up on that really try to pick up our attendances and get as many people returning to Cappielow as we possibly can."

Mr Ross has revealed that he hopes to remain in Greenock for the long-term.

He hopes to take the club to the next level and wants that by doing the right things off the park, it will pay dividends on it.

He said: “You’ve got to go into these things and look at it long term.

“If you look at the short term it’s never going to work. I’m in here and we’ve got a plan with what we want to do with the club and I’ll be working in line and leading with what the Morton Club Together board and the football club board want, what their vision and direction is and I’ll be looking to get the club where it should be.

“We all know where we want to be and where the club could be but it's now down to us to put the work in to achieve that.”
