MORTON defender Michael Ledger believes that he is more than ready to step in and fill the void left by the injured Oisin McEntee.

The Englishman says he has been blown away by the impact of the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international since his arrival from Newcastle.

The former Sunderland youth prospect has had to bide his time to show manager Gus MacPherson he can be his go-to man at right-back.

Ledger believes that Ton have the makings of a good squad with nobody guaranteed a starting berth as he looks to cement his place in the first-team.

He told the Tele: “It was nice to get the call to come back into the fold.

"Obviously it’s unfortunate because Oisin’s picked up an injury but you just have to be ready for whenever that call may come.

“It’s difficult to come on as a defender, trying to get up to speed with the pace of the game, but it was just great to be back out there and to have kept a clean sheet against a free-scoring Partick side, hopefully we can just build on that now.

“I’ve started the season playing in a few different positions.

"Obviously last season I played the majority of it at right-back, but I think that just shows that I'm more than happy to play anywhere that I'm needed.

“I just had to be patient though, I knew that I was only an injury away from getting an opportunity to come back in, so I just need to make the most of it now.

“We’ve got a good squad this year with a lot of options, nobody is guaranteed a starting spot and we’ve seen that already this season.

“To be fair to him, big Oisin has come up and he’s been really good, and I'm really pleased for him to have come up and to have had the impact that he has.

“I’m not a player who’s happy to sit on the bench, so I've been working hard in training and biding my time.

"Hopefully I can get a run of games now and get back to what I do best.”

Ledger believes that Ton can take belief from their 0-0 draw against Partick Thistle on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old says they can take encouragement after recording their fourth shutout in the league this season.

But he knows Ton need to find a ruthless streak in the final third, starting with tomorrow's clash against Hamilton Accies.

He added: “Partick are a good team, we’re delighted to have picked up a positive result against them.

“They’re one of the better teams in the league that we’ve played against, so it’s really positive that we’ve got a clean sheet against them too.

“If we’re getting clean sheets then it shows that we’re nearly there as a finished article, but we just need to start taking our chances in games and putting the ball into the back of the net.

“Especially on Tuesday both times I was sat on halfway thinking, 'this is a goal here' and somehow we’ve just not managed to get onto the end of it.

“If you take one of them and you win 1-0 everything’s good but we didn’t manage to do that – we're not far away but we need to build on that tomorrow against Hamilton.”
