LEGENDARY Premier League boss Neil Warnock has given his full backing to Morton manager Dougie Imrie — and has revealed he hopes to help the club identify new recruits in the transfer window.

The 73-year-old has long been a proud follower of the Greenock club and recently became a member of fans’ investment group Morton Club Together.

Now retired, Warnock focuses on television and radio punditry and he is hoping to attend more Morton games too.

He recently attended the side’s 1-1 draw with league leaders Kilmarnock, inset, and was impressed with Ton’s performance.

The ex-Sheffield United boss praised the job Imrie has done steering the side away from relegation danger since taking over last December.

Warnock says he will offer the Ton boss all the help he can as he looks to take the club forward next season.

He told the Tele: “I enjoyed the Kilmarnock game. If I am honest it might have surprised me a little bit.

“They played some good football. I liked the desire that was on display. I have always been a manager who likes my players to put a tackle in and a header. I think the club are trying hard to get some stability.

“Hopefully Dougie has already got his feelers out for summer.

“I meant to ring him last week as well just to give him some encouragement because I think he has done really well.

“There are opportunities there to grow.

“There are one or two young lads as well. It is going to be interesting next season.

“I will probably come at pre-season and watch them and see how they go, and then I think we are going to be up in Scotland for a couple of months next year.”

Warnock says he will keep an eye on players down south that Ton could potentially look at as summer transfer targets.

He said: “I will speak to Dougie because we had a lad Isaiah Jones at Middlesbrough who had a year at Queen of the South.

“He is the best player they have at the moment this year.

“I gave him a chance pre-season and he has been brilliant, so there might be the odd player. If I can help Dougie at all I will do.”

Warnock has had a strong affection for the Ton.

The former Sheffield United and Cardiff City boss owns a house in Dunoon and often visits the peninsula with his family.

He has a brick at Cappielow for himself and his kids.

He views Morton as his Scottish team after passing Cappielow a number of times when travelling on holiday.

Warnock says he jumped at the chance to join MCT after being invited by director Sam Robinson.

He added: “Sam just said to me would I be interested and I said ‘yes, of course I would, that will do me’.

“Anything that puts my name to it, if I can and I think every club needs people that support it so it was a no-brainer really.

“They just seem a good group of people.

“They try really hard, the manager is doing really well.

“The team looked like they were singing from the same hymn sheet.

“It’s my type of football, they look rosy. I hope they can just maintain themselves at the moment and then get a bit of foundation in there then hopefully take the club forward.”
