MORTON manager Dougie Imrie has issued a rallying cry to the Cowshed to help the team guarantee Championship safety tomorrow.

The Ton need just one point to avoid finishing in the dreaded relegation play-off spot when they face Inverness Caley Thistle in their penultimate match at Cappielow.

Imrie hailed the supporters' backing as 'different class' since he took over in December.

The 38-year-old believes they can play a huge role in ensuring they remain in Scotland's second tier when the Highlanders come calling tomorrow.

He told the Tele: "I have to mention the fans.

"They have been different class since I have come in and hopefully again, they can turn out in their numbers to try and back the team to get over the line."

With Morton five points clear of Dunfermline and Ayr United, Imrie knows the club are in pole position with tomorrow presenting a great opportunity to go and secure the club's safety in the Championship.

Getting the point they require would complete a remarkable turn in fortunes over the club since Imrie took charge and he has put all the praise on his players as he looks to guide them over the line.

He said: "It is in our hands, we can only affect what we do.

"The good thing for us is we have got the points on the board, the other two teams need to win both their games so the pressure is all on them.

"We will go out and play the way we normally do and I just want to make sure by 4.45pm we are in the Championship next season.

"I would be immensely proud. When I took over it was to keep the club in the league and we are nearly there.

"But I don’t really look too much into that, the players do the work at the end of the day.

"I would be more proud of them for the turnaround that we have had since I came in.

"They had a lot of bad press up until that point.

"Since I came in myself and the staff here, the boys have been outstanding.

"All the plaudits must go to them.

"Over the piece they have been terrific."

Imrie's unbeaten record at Cappielow came to an end last Saturday when David's Moyo's sixth-minute strike was to give Hamilton Accies victory.

The Ton boss has urged his players to bounce back from the disappointment.

He said: "Hamilton's goal was one of those things. We don’t track back, when the boy hits the shot Jack [Hamilton] can probably do better he knows that.

"But I can’t be too critical of Jack because he has probably saved us 12-15 points this season with some of the saves that he has made.

"We have just got to defend a little bit better, even trying to put a block on it and at least follow in and clear our lines and give Jack a hand. These things happen, we have just got to try and avoid that.

"It is massive, as is every other game that we been involved in since I came in.

"It is a game that we know that we can take points from.

"Inverness have been on a good run, but when we played them last month we beat them 1-0 up there, so we know we can beat them.

"They will also know that they can beat us, so it has the making of a good game.

"But typically when we have had a poor result we have bounced back with a victory, so hopefully that is the case again tomorrow."
