MORTON striker Gozie Ugwu says he expects changes to the squad this summer as he gets set for contract talks with Dougie Imrie.

Ugwu is one of a number of players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season.

It is understood that discussions with his players will begin in the coming days and weeks as Imrie looks to build for next season after delivering the main aim of keeping the club in the second tier.

The 29-year-old has thanked the fans and backroom staff as he looks beyond the end of the campaign.

He told the Tele: "I really have enjoyed my time here from the start.

"From the fans, the staff and the players, they welcomed me with open arms from the start and it has been a joy to be here.

"Obviously the gaffer has done brilliantly since he has come in to work with us.

"We suspect that the next season he will bring his own players and have his own proper philosophy put into the team.

"We will expect changes and that is the business of football."

Ugwu admits it was a frustrating day in front of goal as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Inverness Caley Thistle.

The only real chance that fell the Englishman’s way came right at the death as he got on the end of a Cameron Blues set-piece delivery, but he saw his header go straight into the hands of Caley Thistle 'keeper Mark Ridgers.

He said: "It was just good to get on the end of something.

"I was just waiting for a ball like that all game really.

"It was just unlucky the 'keeper happened to be in the right place at the right time, but obviously there were lots of positives to take and we are safe now so we can just move from there.

"There were not a lot of clear-cut chances for myself, but that is sometimes how the game goes.

"Sometimes chances like that at the end of the game go in.

"I just got one chance and it will be a goal but sometimes you get chances and sometimes you don’t.

"You score and other times you don’t, it is part and parcel of the game."

The defeat saw the Greenock side end their home campaign with back-to-back losses after going on an impressive seven-game unbeaten run at Cappielow.

Ugwu said: "It was a great run, but we can still be proud of ourselves.

"It was going to come to and end at some point, but we can still be very proud of ourselves.

"The main aim was to obviously make sure we're safe. We have done that, and now there is one game left.

"It is up to the gaffer what he wants to do for the Arbroath game, but we have got the main priority out of the way, and now can look onto next season."
