MORTON Women secured a seventh-place finish in the SWF Championship South in style after toppling Renfrew and Rossvale in the space of 42 hours.

Friday night’s fixture, which was rearranged from the previous Sunday following a Covid outbreak in the Morton squad, took place at Inverclyde Academy.

Colin McEachnie’s side, who were missing eight of their first-team squad, were kept in the match as Asha Caines pulled off two excellent close-range saves.

The Ton held the ball well in the first half and were rewarded in the 38th minute as an excellent cross into the area from defender Taylor Cumberbatch was volleyed into the top corner by Jacqui Seagrave to give the Greenock side a 1-0 lead at the interval.

Winger Sara Patterson added a stunning second goal on the hour mark, curling a free-kick into the top left-hand corner.

A moment of madness in the 67th minute threatened to turn the match on its head as substitute Elisha Hope smashed the post with a penalty following a foul on Caitlin McKee.

Renfrew rallied and netted from the resulting counter attack to set up a frantic finish to the match. The Ton held strong to claim a result that all but guaranteed seventh place.

Morton gaffer Colin McEachnie used the final fixture of the season to give first team action to two academy players as 14-year-old Laila Davidson and 13-year-old Sophie McGinty were named as substitutes to face second-place Rossvale.

The Ton opened the scoring in the 20th minute as a fizzing ball from a Caitlin McKee corner was turned home by Jacqui Seagrave.

Despite an impressive performance by the home side, a long ball forward from Rossvale was turned into the net on the stroke of half-time.

The Ton regained their focus and flew out of the blocks in the second period.

Seagrave was on the goal hunt again, this time sweeping the ball into the path of wing back Rebecca Hickey who smashed a shot home into the top right-hand corner of the net in the 50th minute.

Box-to-box midfielder Seagrave continued her excellent goalscoring form in the 64th minute with a curling effort into the top corner.

The visitors pulled a goal back in the 84th minute but Morton held strong to end their season with an incredible result and performance against the second-placed side.

McEachnie praised the character and fitness of his squad.

He said: "The work over the last nine weeks that the players have put in has been highlighted in both these performances.

"To put that much into two games within 42 hours is incredible and we couldn’t be more proud of them.

"We have played two of the best sides in the league and now we will look to use that to become even stronger next season.

"We were delighted to call up two players from our amazing pathway, with two players from our 2007s joining the matchday squad.

"It was brilliant to welcome them and it shows the quality the pathway has. Having watched Sophie previously I knew that she was more than capable of causing problems in the game and she did just that.”
