BRIAN McLean has revealed he has been offered a non-playing role on top of a one-year extension by Morton as the club look to tie up the veteran defender for another season.

With the centre-back's deal expiring next month, McLean is currently in talks with the club over his future.

The former Motherwell man says talks have been positive with manager Dougie Imrie, who is keen to have him in his squad for the 2022-23 campaign, and the club have offered him a future role in a non-playing capacity.

McLean says he's still weighing up his options and is in no rush to make a final decision on his future.

He told the Tele: "I had a good conversation with the manager in the last week of the season, which was very positive.

"He made it clear that he would like me to stay on and play for another year.

"The club have put something across the table that might be of interest, not just in a playing capacity, which is obviously a future side of things.

"I can’t go into too much detail on that. Those things still need to be ironed out and there is a number of questions that still could be answered and it is still a little bit cloudy on that front.

"In terms of my position I am not in a great rush to make a decision on that."

McLean insists getting regular first team action will be a key factor in his decision and says he doesn't want to just make up the numbers.

He said: "I need to have a little bit of time to reflect.

"Playing time is never guaranteed regardless of who you are at a club.

"You still need to earn the right to be in that starting 11.

"I just need to weigh up a lot of things at my end. I am at the tail end of my career, I don’t want to just be taking part for another year.

"I want to be a part of something and believe in it.

"I believe strongly that the club is heading in the right direction.

"It has the standards that I have set throughout my whole career. I am nearly 38 now, I don’t want to just take a contract for the sake of being involved.

"I want to make sure the club I am signing for has the same ambitions and standards that I have set.

"There are some things from the club’s end as well, so if things can get ironed out then possibly it might still be the option."

McLean has praised the signing of Jack Baird and the ex-Motherwell man believes the centre-half can be a real asset for Ton next season.

He said: "I know Jack very well.

"He is a great lad and when he first signed for Morton, I would travel in with him daily.

"Jack is a great person and player as well.

"Unfortunately things didn’t work out for him at Ayr, which is to Morton’s advantage so to speak.

"He is definitely aggressive. He can handle the ball, and he also has a personality in the dressing room which is great.

"He will conduct his business in the right way, and I think the fans realised that, so it is a great signing.

"Hopefully the club can build on the signing."
