REECE Lyon believes there's no reason Morton can't pull off a shock when they take on Hibs in the Premier Sports Cup.

The midfielder is relishing a return visit to Easter Road three years after he was part of the Ton side that were knocked out of the same competition after a thrilling 5-3 contest after extra time.

Lyon says he and his team-mates will approach the game against Lee Johnson's men with a positive mindset to try earn a victory this time around, as they look to try progress out of the group that also contains Clyde, Falkirk and Bonnyrigg Rose.

He told the Tele: "It is a good draw. A few years ago we had Hibs at Easter Road and I thought we did well.

"We probably should have got something from the game.

"We were beaten in extra time, so we will be looking forward to it and being positive about the tie, and hopefully we can get through.

"These are the games you want to play in. As a player you want to play in the big games, in the big stadiums, so all the boys will be looking forward to it.

"We have been there and done it before, so there's no reason we can't go and get something this time."

The 22-year-old was one of only nine players to be contracted beyond the end of last season after signing a two-year deal in February.

He is happy to be able to enjoy his time off without having to worry about his future as he prepares to return to the training pitch for pre-season later this month.

He said: "It was nice to get a bit of security a while before the season ended.

"It was good to get a bit of security. My full focus will be on Morton for the next two years.

"I am looking forward to getting back. Obviously we have had a well-needed rest.

"Last season was hard for everybody, it was a good end to the last season but it was a long one I felt, so it was good to get a rest."

Cameron Blues and Robbie Muirhead confirmed their futures with the Cappielow club this week after penning two-year contract extensions.

Lyon believes it's crucial they can keep the squad of players together that steered Morton to Championship safety.

He added: "I'm delighted Cameron and Robbie are staying.

"It would be good if we could get the core of the squad back again.

"The gaffer has added a few as well, so hopefully we can progress even more.

"We can take a lot of confidence from last season.

"In December before the gaffer came in, we were really struggling.

"If nothing changed, we didn’t know where we would have been this summer looking at next season.

"But the gaffer came in and we have really pushed on and we have ended up finishing seventh.

"We can take confidence and hopefully push on even more next season."
