NEW Morton signing Brian Schwake says he's determined to make the number one jersey his own after completing his loan move to Cappielow this week.

The shot-stopper joins on a season-long deal from Livingston and gives manager Dougie Imrie a needed-boost, with uncertainty over first choice goalkeeper Jack Hamilton's future and the departure of back-up Joshua Bysouth.

It remains to be seen what options manager Imrie will have at his disposal in the goalkeeping department, however, Schwake wants to make sure he's first pick regardless of the competition.

He told the Tele: "Every 'keeper wants to play, and obviously only one person can, and I just want to do my best to make sure that is me.

"As a young 'keeper one of the most important things is to get games, and I think that I have developed so much just by playing and learning from the games and hopefully I can continue to do that."

Last term saw Schwake enjoy a successful spell on loan at Edinburgh City where he was named in the SPFL League Two team of the season.

He helped the Citizens secure promotion through the play-offs, and he feels he is capable of now making the step-up to Championship level.

He said: "We had a long season, and we found our form right at the end of it.

"We kicked on and it was a brilliant thing to be a part of.

"To go up through the play-offs, it is now just the next step in my progression and I definitely feel that I am ready to make it."

The 20-year-old says he's well aware red-hot atmosphere Morton fans create on matchdays and is relishing playing in front of the Cappielow faithful.

Schwake said: "I have watched Morton before and I know how good a club it is.

"I'm also aware of how passionate the fans are and that is something I want to be a part of.

"I played a friendly at Morton a few years ago and I remember the fans that came out.

"I was playing for Livingston reserves and it was during Covid so they weren’t allowed in.

"But there was a big group of fans behind the goal and I just remember it making an impression on me.

"That's support is something I would be grateful to play in front of."

The American-born goalkeeper says manager Imrie played a big part in swaying his decision to join the club, having known him from their time together at Livingston when the Ton boss was a coach there.

He added: "I have worked with the gaffer before and when the chance came about, I was just eager to come in and get started.

"I always admired him when he was there and we all saw how well he did last season with the team."
