MICHAEL Garrity has told Morton boss Dougie Imrie he can help chip in with goals and assists this season - if he's given the chance in the first team.

The 19-year-old grabbed his chance to impress the Ton manager by scoring in their opening pre-season friendly away at Annan on Saturday, with the match ending 2-2 at Raydale Park in Gretna.

The promising attacker is hopeful of opportunities in Imrie’s side this season and he feels he can add an extra goal threat to the side if he can get minutes on the pitch.

Garrity told the Tele: "It was good for the boys to get back out there and get some minutes in the legs and it was also nice personally to get a goal.

"Goals always help with confidence, which improves my performances, and if given the chance I feel like I could provide goals and assists for the team."

Garrity spent last season on loan against Saturday’s opposition and was part of Peter Murphy's side that narrowly missed out on promotion to League One.

The Ton academy graduate says he enjoyed seeing familiar faces and is thankful for how his spell at Galabank helped in his development.

The youngster has been trying to catch the eye in the early weeks of pre-season - with hopes of making an impression on his manager.

He said: "It’s been good to be back and see the boys and some new faces.

"The training has been very intense as expected, but it will be beneficial for when the season starts.

"I’ve looked after myself over the break, so I just want to continue my hard work in training and games and hopefully it pays off.

"It was great seeing the boys again.

"Annan helped me develop last season which I am thankful for."

Having faced Stenhousemuir last night, Morton face a step up in opposition as they travel to the Toni Macaroni Arena to face Livingston on Saturday.

Garrity sees the friendly as an opportunity to further test how the Greenock side are shaping up ahead of the season getting underway a week on Saturday as the Premier Sports Cup begins with Falkirk travelling to Cappielow.

Garrity is relishing the chance to show what they can do against top flight opponents this weekend.

He added: "Saturday will be a good test for me personally and for the team, but if we play the way we know we can it should be a good match up.

"It's perfect to get a real test before the first competitive game of the season. It's another good chance to get some minutes and hopefully get onto the scoresheet.

"The League Cup is perfect for the season as it gets competitive games in early before the season starts, hopefully we can get off to a good start before the league starts."
