CARLO Pignatiello says Morton players are keeping their feet on the ground after their impressive victory over Livingston.

The Ton came through their first three pre-season games unbeaten having come away with a draw and a win against Annan and Stenhousemuir respectively before Saturday's win in West Lothian.

The utility man believes it was important to build a winning mentality before this weekend's visit of Falkirk in their Premier Sports Cup opener.

However, Pignatiello knows their hard work in pre-season will mean nothing if they can't get off to a flying start against the Bairns.

He told the Tele: "It was good but nobody is getting carried away.

"It was a friendly and they don’t count for anything.

"These games are training sessions pretty much and obviously they're about getting ourselves ready for the big one on Saturday.

"But we want to win them, so it was good to get into the habit of winning going early doors and everybody was really happy with it.

"We have not even played a competitive game yet, so we are not getting carried away with anything.

"We know the season starts on Saturday and we need to get off to a good start."

The 22-year-old, however, says Dougie Imrie's men can take positives from the performance and the result ahead of the Group D opener against Falkirk.

He said: "I thought it was a good game and we defended well.

"They probably had more of the ball but I didn’t think they did too much to trouble us.

"They had a quick free-kick they did well from and got a chance, but apart from that I don’t remember Brian Schwake having a lot of saves to make.

"Then they made a couple of individual errors and we capitalised on them, that is what you need to do against good teams.

"We have got into good habits and we just need to continue that.

"If we keep up those standards then hopefully we can get the results from it.

"That starts on Saturday against Falkirk, who are obviously a very good team."

Pignatiello left Livi before joining Morton on a pre-contract at the end of May.

But the ex-Dumbarton man insists he had no point to prove against his former side.

He added: "I didn’t really think about that.

"I was thinking about trying to do well and prove myself in the Morton team.

"I wasn’t thinking about trying to do anything special because I was played against my old team or anything, it never came into it.

"It was nice to get the win, I was just happier for the boys that we got the win and we played well.

"I obviously have a lot of friends there and I know everybody, it was good to see everyone and catch up, but it was nice to win the game as well."

The utility man has played a part in all three friendlies so far and he is now looking forward to the build-up for Saturday’s season opener, which could see him make his competitive debut for Morton.

Pignatiello added: "Everyone has been training and we are all excited.

"It is the first competitive game of the season and whether it is the fans or the players, everyone is excited about the start of the season.

"I have been looking forward to it and hopefully we can go out and do well and try and get a good result for the fans and the club."
