BRIAN McLean says his emotional connection to Morton will be put in the backburner as he prepares to face his former club in the Premier Sports Cup for Clyde this Saturday.

The veteran centre-back joined the Bully Wee last week having left Cappielow upon the expiry of his contract at the end of last season and will come against his ex-employers in his third match for his new side.

The group tie, which will be played at New Douglas Park, will see the League One side host the Ton and, despite his strong connection having spent three years at Cappielow, the defender will be going all out to cause a cup shock.

He told the Tele: "At the end of the day it is just another game.

"It is another 11 bodies versus 11 bodies, it is not really different.

"When you take the sort of emotional element there will be some attachment to that for sure.

"I’ll see some friendly faces, but ultimately it is a game of football that we are craving and we want to win and take charge of."

Having played under Dougie Imrie for six months, McLean is well aware of his former side's qualities and is expecting a tough 90 minutes.

However, the veteran defender says Danny Lennon's men will be unfazed coming up against a Championship outfit.

McLean said: "Every game is different.

"With Morton, and seeing how Dougie Imrie and Andy Millen work behind the scenes, you kind of know that you are going to be right in a game.

"Then it is up to the opposition to stand up to that. That is how we approached things when the manager came in.

"Now I am on the other side of the fence, so it is important we stand up to that and we absorb it.

"But also we to make an impact, and get the ball down when we want it to be played on the deck.

"It is important that we manage to put our stall out as well because at the end of the day we are at home.

"We want to maintain that home team advantage element."

Clyde opened the competition with a 5-0 defeat against Hibs at Easter Road.

The 37-year-old isn't against the early start to the campaign and believes it makes for some exciting and unpredictable ties.

He said: "I think that is the beauty of the campaign. That showed with the first round of fixtures as there were some surprising results.

"You look at Ayr United being held against Elgin, you would have expected that to have been plain sailing at Somerset.

"That is the beauty of the cup and the time of year.

"It is just about trying to get up to speed as quickly as you possibly can, myself included.

"I have only had probably one proper training session with the group and the rest of my pre-season I have been on my own.

"In that respect it is important that I try and look after myself.

"If we can get the result to match then that’s even better."
