MORTON matchwinner Jai Quitongo hopes that his first Cappielow goal in four years will be a watershed moment as he looks to give back to the club that helped him make his way in the game.

In a mature performance from the attacker against Cove Rangers, Quitongo took the game by the scruff of the neck, netting a spectacular strike to settle things 13 minutes from time.

He admits it’s been a long and dark journey since he departed Sinclair Street in 2018.

The striker joked that he is like horror film character Michael Myers as he keeps coming back from multiple injuries, and he insists he won’t take any second of action for granted this season.

He told the Tele: "It's been four years since my last Morton goal and it goes without saying that a lot has gone on in that time.

"I've had a few big injuries and luck really hasn't been on my side, but touch wood that's me on the other side of it now.

"I'm just happy to be back on the football pitch if I'm being honest. I've been through some dark times, I've missed about three years of my career and that's why now when I'm playing I appreciate it that bit more.

"I don't take it for granted now.

"Between having a bit of bad luck with a freak injury and doing the tendons in my knee and not playing, it's been tough.

"But I have a laugh with my brother Rico, he says I'm like Michael Myers, with all the injuries I've had I just keep coming back.

"Scoring my first goal back was a bit special too.

"Morton were the club that gave me my opportunity. I have a different feeling when I come here.

"I know what they've given me, so it's time for me to give back.

"I have a lot more responsibility this time around, so hopefully I can make a big impact now.”

Quitongo believes that securing a victory over Cove was huge for his side.

He revealed that words said at half-time spurred he and his team-mates to do the business in the second half after tailing off before the break.

He said: "I thought it was a big three points for the boys. We started well and then fell away a bit towards the end of the first half.

"The gaffer and Andy [Millen] said the right things to us at half-time and it managed to get a reaction out of us.

"We showed our fitness levels as well because we were pressing them well in the 90th minute, forcing mistakes from them.

"It was a well earned victory."
