JACK Baird believes turning Cappielow into a fortress will be key to Morton having a successful campaign.

Ton lost just two games in front of their own fans after Dougie Imrie took over in January last season as their unbeaten run helped the Greenock men avoid relegation trouble.

The defender wants to make sure Cappielow maintains its fearsome reputation as a ground teams hate to visit, starting this Saturday against league leaders Dundee.

He told the Tele: "We always want to win at home, or at least not lose.

"We want to make Cappielow a hard place for people to visit.

"Everybody wants that in this league, we want everybody dreading coming here. That is the key to success.

"Hopefully we can carry on the way we left off here against Cove, but it will be a different challenge against Dundee, so we will just take it as it comes.

"We have done alright at home, in the most part, and hopefully we will do the same on Saturday."

Baird says it was important the players didn't dwell on their defeat against Raith Rovers as they stepped up preparations for this weekend's clash against Dundee.

The 26-year-old was impressed with Gary Bowyer's side's televised victory over Arbroath.

The 4-2 win over Dick Campbell's men saw the Dens Park side hit the Championship summit - but Baird insists Morton players will be up for the challenge against the title favourites.

He said: "Saturday is sort of dealt with on a Monday, by the time we go out to train in the morning then we're thinking about the next game on Saturday.

"There is no point dwelling on a bad result or a good one because you can’t do anything about it.

"The focus was on Dundee from pretty much 10.30am on Monday.

"Dundee are a good team, they’ll be hoping to get promoted.

"They were good last Friday night against Arbroath. They have a new manager, some of the same players and some new ones and they look like a decent team.

"It will be a difficult game but we will try our hardest to get something."

Baird believes the cut-throat nature of the Championship means every point will be a prisoner this season.

He added: "At the end of the day it is just 10 teams all in a similar position.

"There is not a lot between them, and you have a good chance of beating anyone in this league.

"Saturday at three o’clock is what the whole week is about.

"There is no point in working hard all week to then not go and perform on a Saturday. That is when it matters.

"It would be brilliant to get a good result at the weekend, but it will be tough."
