MORTON head for the Highlands tomorrow as they try to build on last week's impressive showing against Championship title favourites Dundee.

Ton make the long trek up the A9 for a clash against Billy Dodds' Inverness Caledonian Thistle side buoyed by a bit of belief from their admirable shift against the Dark Blues.

They had to settle for a point from a game which they just about edged, but any sense of disappointment at the outcome was emphatically cancelled out by what was a very encouraging display.

The Greenock men went into the game smarting from a largely self-inflicted 2-1 defeat against Raith but responded excellently, giving Gary Bowyer and his team a very uncomfortable afternoon in the Cappielow sunshine.

There was a lot to like about the way they played, both collectively and individually, in what was an enjoyable game to watch.

Dougie Imrie's side worked their socks off from the outset and produced their best showing of the season so far.

With a break of the ball in the box they would have claimed victory, with Robbie Crawford, Jaze Kabia, Alexander King and Jack Baird all coming close to scoring during what was an engrossing 90 minutes.

Ton hustled Dundee from the off and spurred on by strong backing from the Cowshed took the game to the visitors at every opportunity - all that was missing was that final killer touch.

At the other end the defence was solid throughout against a good forward line, with Darragh O'Connor looking much more convincing and Baird beside him putting in a commanding performance.

But perhaps the pick of the bunch was King, who put in a terrific show at left back, defending calmly and powerfully and also posing a threat going forward.

The young prospect looks more at home each time he plays and has a bright future ahead of him if he continues in this vein.

In the middle of the park new signing Crawford looked lively in the first half and showed enough to suggest that he will be a valuable signing after being surprisingly released by Partick Thistle this summer.

Up front Jai Quitongo continued his promising start to his second stint with the club, proving a thorn in the side of the Dundee defence throughout and unsettling them at every opportunity with his pace, power and direct style.

There were plenty of positives to take from the 90 minutes, demonstrated by the upbeat reception given to the players and manager at full-time.

If Morton can play in this fashion most weeks of the season then they will not go far wrong - the trick will be in trying to find a bit of consistency with what is a young group of players.

Another aspect where they can definitely improve is in finding the cutting edge that will turn draws into victories.

If they could add a bit of guile and some more composure in the attacking third then they would be reasonably well placed to kick on.

Bringing in a player who can add these qualities is easier said than done, but Imrie has stated he is hoping to get some business tied up before the end of the transfer window.

He may be aided in that process by the six-figure cash injection that the club and its owners MCT have done well to attract from Dalrada Technology, in a record deal which was announced on the eve of the Dees' clash.

If this helps gives the manager a bit budgetary headroom to bring someone in then that would be a big bonus on its own.

But the bigger picture is that the arrival of new sponsors, monetising of stadium naming rights, a fresh face in the boardroom and a partnership helping to modernise the running of the club are all very welcome developments.

Turning back to on field matters, Ton will be expecting another tough test tomorrow against Caley.

After losing in the play-off finals at the back end of last term the Jags are one of the fancied sides in the promotion race, although it would be fair to say they have made an indifferent start to the new campaign.

Draws against Queen's Park and Arbroath were followed by a 4-1 win over Cove, but Dodds and his players were then on the receiving end of the same scoreline in a Friday fright-night against Partick Thistle.

You can guarantee they will be smarting from that abject outing and Dodds will demand an immediate reaction from a group of players he trusts and has been showering praise on for many months.

Either they will come out fighting and determined to atone or perhaps their confidence may have taken a knock - from that point of view the early stages of tomorrow's game could be important.

Morton won 1-0 on their last visit to this venue and head north with a bit of wind in their sails.

With the clubs sitting right beside each other in the table on five points apiece, this looks set to be another tight and intriguing encounter between them.
