DARRAGH O’Connor has warned Dipo Akinyemi isn't the only goal threat Morton need to keep at bay when Ayr United come calling on Saturday.

The English striker has been a revelation since arriving at Somerset Park and has scored six goals in his first five outings in the league.

O'Connor is looking forward to facing the on-form striker and he believes keeping the shackles on Akinyemi will be crucial if they want to stop the Championship leaders in their tracks.

But the central defender insists Ayr aren't a one-man team as Lee Bullen has quality throughout his side.

He told the Tele: "Akinyemi has six goals in five games and he deserves credit for that, but we will be looking to nullify him.

"We have done a bit of analysis on him, and the whole team.

"He is not just the main threat that we know they will cause.

"If we stick to the game plan, I can’t see why we can’t keep a clean sheet and keep all of their attacking players quiet.

"It's going to be two teams on Saturday coming off the back of positive results.

"At the end of the day we are only three points behind Ayr.

"It is going to be a tough game, as all the games in the Championship this year are going to be, but anybody can beat anyone in this league.

"It is going to be a good game, and hopefully we can get a positive result out of it."

The 23-year-old has been part of the Ton backline that has kept three cleans in the league so far this season.

O'Connor says having a solid backline builds confidence throughout the team and he is hopeful they can keep Ayr’s frontline quiet as they seek a third shutout in a row.

He said: "As a back four and with Brian [Schwake] we are just happy to contribute to clean sheets.

"If we keep the ball out of our net it gives the boys at the top end of the pitch every confidence to stick it in theirs.

"I am happy we have got two cleans in a row, but it gets reset now on Saturday.

"We need to aim to get a clean sheet and let the boys at the top end of the pitch do their job."

Morton face the Honest Men twice in September after being draw against them in the SPFL Trust Trophy third round on Monday.

With Linfield and Cliftonville involved in this season's tournament, the former Motherwell man says he was disappointed to miss out a trip back to his native Northern Ireland.

However, O'Connor is relishing the chance to face their Championship rivals at Cappielow.

He added: "I would’ve loved to go away to Northern Ireland to go back home, but it is going to be another game for us that is going to be tough.

"It is against good opposition and we won’t drop our standards.

"We definitely won’t want to lose to Ayr at home on Saturday or on the 24th."
