MORTON midfielder Reece Lyon says he'll use his loan spell at Annan Athletic to work his way back into Dougie Imrie's plans after injury derailed his season.

The midfielder joined the League Two side last week on a four-month spell after falling down the pecking order at Cappielow.

The 22-year-old, who made his bow for the Galabankies on Saturday against Forfar, believes getting more first team action under his belt will make him stronger when he returns to his parent club in January.

He told the Tele: "I had a good pre-season and the games I played in I did well.

"Obviously I picked up an injury and trained through it and then played against Cove Rangers.

"To be honest I shouldn’t have played, so it was probably my own fault.

"The injury kind of hindered things. The boys did well in the two or three games I was injured, so the manager just pulled me in and said right now they are ahead of me.

"The last two or three years at Morton I have been in and out the team and I felt it has been stop-start, so it was the right time to try and play consistent games for the first time in a while.

"The gaffer just said that a few teams had phoned, and Annan was one of them.

"Honestly, I wasn’t really too fussed where or who it was. I knew it was only until January and I just wanted to go and play games.

"Besides playing I felt as though I needed a change anyway, I have been at Morton a long time and I felt as if a change in scenery would do me no harm.

"It was getting a bit repetitive, so I just felt that I needed a new bit of life in me, and I think going on loan and trying something different can re-energise me and I might come back a different player."

Lyon admits falling in and out of the first team in the last few seasons has been a big regret during his time at Morton.

The central midfielder believes a consistent run in Peter Murphy's first team will be a shot in the arm his career needs.

He said: "I have not really had a consistent run in the first team since the start of David Hopkins' time in charge.

"Since his second season it was kind of stop-start from there until now.

"I have not really had that run of games, over 10 games in a row, so it has not really helped.

"Hopefully being out on loan until January will allow me to get 15 games under my belt in a row and see where it takes me."

The Morton youth academy graduate is under contract until 2024.

He says he will just take each week as it comes in terms of working his way back into the Morton manager's plans when he returns.

He added: "I still have this season and next season under my contract, but I am not even thinking that far ahead at the moment.

"I am just going to enjoy my time away.

"I just need to enjoy a different environment, and when it comes to it, I will think about it then."
