MORTON midfielder Cameron Blues has heaped praise on inspirational team-mate Robbie Muirhead after the striker resurrected his career and became a key man at Cappielow.

The midfielder has now been a teammate and friend of the former Scotland U21 international for the best part of five years and he says that Ton’s top scorer has shown unbelievable resilience to overcome many personal hurdles in the last few years to get back to his firing best.

Blues reckons that the 30-yard stunner Muirhead netted at Dens Park last weekend, his eleventh goal of the season, just sums up the redemption story he has written in the last 15 months under Dougie Imrie.

Greenock Telegraph:

He told the Tele: “I’m delighted for Robbie, everyone in the team is. I think he fully deserves all the recognition that he’s been getting this season.

“His free kick against Dundee just sums him up really.

"He’s got unbelievable ability and if we get a free kick within a reasonable position in the attacking half we just leave him to it.

"Nobody gets in his way and we just let him do what he wants.

“It was an unbelievable finish with great technique."

Blues revealed that Muirhead has gone through some tough times since arriving in Greenock in 2019.

He said: “I don’t think Robbie would mind me saying that he was in a kind of a difficult place for a long period of the beginning of his time here. But for him to come through the other side of it and to now be the main man, it’s unbelievable.

“To have been able to come through that with him is brilliant, I couldn’t be happier for him.

“It shows not only the mentality that he’s got, but the ability that he has too.

"I think he's been brilliant this season and now I think you’re seeing the benefits of him enjoying his football again.

"He’s been on a different level this season.

“He’s really come into his own and is now one of the leaders we have on the pitch and I think that some of the younger boys could learn from him too.

"With him they can see that people go through a tough time and can come out the other side of it stronger and better. It’s inspiring.

“After watching the recent Ayr game from the stands with my head injury, I spoke to him afterwards and told him that you could see how much of a presence he’s become on the park.

"He’s one of the one’s you’d always hear and see no matter what way the game was going, that again shows the confidence he’s found.

“It can only benefit the team when you’ve got a guy of that quality on the pitch, but he’s taking the game by the scruff of the neck and being a leader too."

Blues meanwhile insists the mood in the camp is positive despite last week’s Dens Park late letdown.

He believes that the only way to bounce back is by beating Raith Rovers who visit Cappielow on Saturday.

Blues said: “The group is usually positive regardless of what’s happened and that’s been no different this week.

“With the circumstances that we had in the game, we’re disappointed to have only come away with a point, so we’re desperate to make up for that this weekend.

“We’ve had three good performances against them this season.

“I think they’re a good team, but if we bring a good performance then we can get a good result and hopefully see where it takes us."
