MORTON boss Dougie Imrie knows Saturday’s do or die Championship clash against Queen's Park is guaranteed to end in heartbreak for one side and has challenged his side not to be on the receiving end of it.

Ton and the title chasing Spiders will face off at Cappielow and Imrie has issued a rallying cry to members of the Inverclyde public to come out and back their side.

He wants them to help Ton's play-off push and is going into the game full of hope from his side's record against Queen's this season, after they picked up seven points from a possible nine against the Ochilview outfit.

Imrie told the Tele: “Maximum points is the plan. Saturday was a must win against Raith and it’s the same again this week against Queen's Park to hopefully make an inroad into the play-offs.

“We do know that we’ll need some results to go for us elsewhere but at the end of the day we can only focus on the job we’ve got to do. And for us, that’s picking up three points.

“It’ll be difficult. Queen's Park are a good team, they’ve spent most of the season at the top end of the table so we know how hard it’ll be to get a result against them.

“The thing going for us is that after playing against them we’ve picked up seven points so far. That’s got to be a plus and we’re looking to make it ten out of 12.

“That’s the aim but obviously depending on how Friday night's game with Dundee playing Cove, it could be a difficult game for both teams.

“Come Saturday there’s going to be one team coming away heartbroken.

"If we lose then our play-off dream is over.

"But if we win then Queen's Park can’t win the league, so someone will be disappointed.

“If results had gone differently over the last few weeks we could’ve been in there, so it’s got the potential to be a horrible few weeks for the fans. That's just football at times. It has its ups and downs.

“It would be nice to see as many people at the game as possible. There’s no Old Firm game on so hopefully we can see some neutrals come down and back us to try and get over the line.

“I think we need it for 90 minutes, we need voices to push the boys on as well. Admittedly the game might not always be the best of spectacles but sometimes that backing can spark something special.”

Imrie says it shouldn't be overlooked that his side could finish the season on a strong run, but concedes they have drawn too many games latterly.

He told the Tele: “We could potentially finish the season having lost two out of our last twelve if things go the way we want.

“We’ve had some fantastic runs of form and what’s probably killed us is the draws. But if you’re picking up a point every week then you’re doing something right.

“In 2017 the club finished in fourth with 52 points, we’re on 51 with two games to play. We’re now in 2023 and it’s been a long time since the club has had that many points.

“So if we miss out then it’s not going to have been for the lack of trying, especially if we surpass that tally.”
