MORTON bosses have hit out at SPFL chiefs in the aftermath of yesterday's fixture announcement that will see the club take on its fourth 100 mile-plus journey to close the season out in four years.

The yearly announcement, that gets supporters up and down the country glued to their phones as they go about planning the next nine months of their lives and many a Ton fan were left delighted after receiving a promising opening five fixtures.

Ton open their season at home to Ayr United, before traveling to a big-spending Raith Rovers seven days later.

They then welcome Arbroath and last season's Premiership play-off final losers Partick to Cappielow before travelling to league favourites Dundee United in September.

But bosses have said it is unfair to keep on expecting fans to fork out hundreds of pounds at vital times of the season after being given a trip to the Highland Capital on Friday, May 3, the fourth marathon away trip on the final day in a row.

The last time that Ton saw out the season at home coming six years ago.

A statement provided to the Tele said: "There's a massive buzz around the club with the launch of the fixtures today, and we can't wait to get started at home to Ayr on August 5.

"However, we were disappointed to see that for the fourth year in a row, we have been handed a lengthy away trip on the final day. We will now have had Arbroath twice, Cove once and Inverness within four years, all away from home on a Friday night.

"While we understand that every team needs to travel to these places at some point, it is disappointing to have had similar journeys on the final day in multiple successive seasons.

"For our supporters, it is a lot to ask for them to make these trips on a Friday night, and although we know they will do it and back the team with their incredible support, it is a big ask year after year."

Other notable ties see Ton travel to Inverness on December 30 before first footing familiar faces Ayr United on January 2 to bring in their 150th anniversary year.

Dougie Imrie's men will face the two newly promoted sides from League One in back to back games come the end of September as they travel to Dunfermline on September 23, before welcoming Airdrieonians to Cappielow on September 30.

Ton will look to see out the season in style as they face Airdrie, Dundee United, Arbroath, Raith Rovers and then embark on said long journey up to Inverness as they look to go one step further and get into the Premiership play-offs.
