WHINHILL Golf Club recently held the Whinhill Open Trophy competition with home player Matthew McAulay returning an excellent nett score of 62 to claim victory.

A field of 128 competed for the final open competition on the club's calendar, and a much sought after major trophy.

Club officials said it was great to see over 40 visitors join them from Gourock Golf Club, Greenock Golf Club, Largs Golf Club, Lochwinnoch Golf Club and Port Glasgow Golf Club and others.

They said: "We hope that everyone enjoyed the course and we look forward to welcoming them all back to our open competitions next year."

Winner Matthew was out in the first game of the day, so it was an anxious wait to find out if he managed to hang on to his lead.

A few players threatened to post a better score, but none quite managed to get it over the line.

Second place went to David McFarlane with a great nett score of 63 with Paul Martin one shot further back with fine nett scores of 64.

Paul McCarn secured the best scratch prize after beating three other golfers who returned the same score of 69 by virtue of BIH.

Robert Sherrard of Greenock Golf Club won the ‘Best Visitor’ award with a nett score of 65.

Congratulations go to Matthew and to all who took part in the Whinhill Open Trophy.

The club said that a number of visitors commented on the quality of the putting surfaces. Many thanks to Peter and his team for all of their hard work on the course.
