ONE of Inverclyde's most committed bowlers is hoping to inspire more players to follow in his footsteps and join the ranks as an umpire.

Greenock Telegraph:

Ardgowan Bowling Club's honorary secretary Gilbert McCracken, who has been involved in the game for 40 years, also gives up his time to officiate at matches as well.

Now he is appealing for others from the bowling community to consider doing their bit to help local competitions thrive.

The Greenock and District League are running umpire courses and looking for volunteers to sign up for.

Gilbert, 64, who lives in Greenock, said: "I decided to take on the role as an umpire myself because I wanted to give something back.

"I have been involved in bowling for the last 40 years and I wanted to put something back in.

"We are looking for people who are able to give up their own time to do the course and to umpire. It is a great way of progressing in bowling.

"It opens up so many opportunities, you can end up being an umpire at national finals.

"I really enjoy being an umpire, I have been doing it for a number of years now.

"I think the most important thing is to know the rules inside out! I have also played at county level and that helps as well.

"I have to say everyone is very respectful and the umpire's decision is final.

"We need umpires so that we can run our district competitions, every sport needs referees. They are crucial, but it is hard to recruit."

With only a handful of umpires remaining for district matches, Gilbert is appealing to clubs across Inverclyde to get involved.

The umpire course runs for ten weeks and is happening at Ardgowan Bowling Club and then indoors.

Anyone who is a member of a bowling club and would like to be involved can contact the association on 07949189572.
